Gödöllő Climate Club

February 2010

In our February Club Richard Halmay, our colleague, member of management in our Association, environmental manager of Telenor Hungary and editor of naturezone.hu gave a presentation.

In his presentation Richard talked about the independent, renewable resource based system (solar cells and wind turbine) that was set up by himself on his farm.

If you could not come to the Club, you can read about his presentation on the website below:

http://www.naturezone.hu/2009/11/04/autonom-aramtermeles-napelem-es-szelturbina-segitsegevel/

On the same website you can find the presentation in English.

Club carbon footprint

In the February Club there were more participants so the related carbon dioxide emission was also higher, a total of 181 kg (while for the December Club it was 103 kg and the January Club 99 kg). The proportions of the emission also changed as far as the sources are concerned. Until now food and drinks resulted in the highest emission. This time it was transportation that resulted in the largest amount of emission.

The footprints of clubs are calculated with the Energy Club event-footprint calculator

Recommended by our Club members

All our members can send in materials in our Newsletter and recommend anything related to climate-friendly life: news, films, books etc. We do our best to communicate these ideas in the best possible way. Now we have collected these interesting things from the e-mails we received:

*** FILM ***

Related film recommended by Sándor Pogácsás. The film can be downloaded free:

http://www.home-2009.com/us/index.html

http://www.youtube.com/user/homeproject

The language of the film is English. It was directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and journalist Isabelle Delannoy made the following comment about it:

’The film shows that humans are fantastic creatures. They can adapt to nature very efficiently.... or they can change it very efficiently. The big question is, however, how we use our fantastic talent.’

*** BIOFARMS ***

Tamás Varga gave us the information that now you can join the WWOOF system in Hungary, too. And through this system you can do volunteer work in Hungarian organic farms:

http://www.wwoof.hu/Magyar/Fooldal

The meaning of WWOOF is: Word Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. WWOOF is an international network which started in England in the 1970s and since then has become an international movement. WWOOF helps people to learn as much as possible about organic farming and sustainable development.

WWOOF is a system of mutual exchange in which volunteers help the farmers who in return provide food and accommodation as well as an opportunity to learn about the organic farming lifestyle.

In connection with organic farming we would like to draw your attention to the newsletter of Nyitott Kert Alapítvány (Open Garden Foundation), which has been recommended by Franciska Bogdányi. In the newsletter you can read about news and events concerning organic farming and local food products:

We tasted it in the February Club:

poppy-seed and sour cherry cake recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ l ground poppy-seed
  • ½ l milk
  • ½ l flour
  • ½ l sugar
  • 1 baking powder
  • cc. 1 dl sunflower oil
  • cc. 300 g sour cherries without pips

It is very easy to make this cake: in a big bowl mix everything except the cherries. Pour it into a baking tin that has been buttered and powdered with flour. Put the cherries on top and bake it for about 30 minutes at 180 degrees in pre-heated oven. With a needle you can test if it is well-baked.

The setting up of the Gödöllő Climate Club was supported by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission in the framework of the“Changing Behaviour” programme.
